“This project is the result of long-term cooperation between the teams of the Uzbek and Czech governments, Uzbek Railways, and Škoda Group. Uzbekistan is a dynamically developing country with ambitious plans for the modernisation of its transport infrastructure, and we are ready, as part of a long-term partnership, to share the technological know-how behind our products and deliver solutions that meet current requirements for sustainable and efficient mobility,” said Petr Novotný, CEO of Škoda Group.
The delivery will include ten state-of-the-art electric trains of a new generation from Škoda Group, designed for the 1,520 mm gauge and based on a proven electric train platform already in operation in Latvia and Estonia. The trains will offer passengers a high standard of comfort, reliability, and energy efficiency.
“The project also includes the localisation of Škoda Group’s service activities for these trains directly in Uzbekistan, along with the gradual transfer of know-how and maintenance procedures, enabling local partners to independently carry out servicing in the future,” added Petr Novotný, CEO of Škoda Group. The project will thus contribute not only to the development of railway transport but also to strengthening the industrial base and employment in Uzbekistan.
The project has received direct support from the Czech government, the European Commission—where it holds flagship project status under the Global Gateway initiative—the European Parliament, the European Investment Bank, and EGAP.
Uzbekistan and the wider Central Asian region, with a population of more than 70 million, represent a significant growth market opportunity in the field of transport infrastructure. The project also fits into the broader context of the development of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, which connects Europe and Asia and is among the key strategic initiatives in international transport.
Export Success of Škoda Group Trains
Škoda Group continues to strengthen its position in international markets. In Bulgaria, the company will deliver new four-car electric trains meeting European technical and safety standards, equipped with ETCS, air conditioning, Wi-Fi connectivity, a CCTV system, and full accessibility.
There is also strong interest among operators in Škoda’s battery technologies. Following the successful deployment of the first trains in the Czech Republic at the turn of 2024 and 2025 and the signing of a contract for up to 36 battery trains for Slovakia, Škoda Group has secured another major contract in the Baltic region – the delivery of up to 16 battery trains for Latvia. These projects confirm the growing demand for solutions enabling environmentally friendly operation even on non-electrified lines and further strengthen Škoda Group’s position in the rapidly developing battery train segment.
